1. Charakterystyka żywności / składnika

The food that is the subject of the health claim is kaki. Kaki is a plant with the scientific name Diospyros kaki L. The Panel assumes from the conditions of use that the part to be consumed is the fruit of the kaki tree. The fruit is called kaki fruit, sharon fruit, persimmon, Chinese plum and Korean mango.
The Panel considers that the food kaki fruit, which is the subject of the health claim, is sufficiently characterised.

The claimed effect is “eye health”. The Panel assumes that the target population is the general population.
The Panel considers that maintenance of normal vision is beneficial to human health.

3. Naukowe uzasadnienia wpływu na zdrowie człowieka - Utrzymanie prawidłowego wzroku

A total of 78 references were cited to substantiate the health claim. These references were studies on different kaki fruit constituents such as lutein and zeaxanthin. None of the references reported on studies with the food, kaki fruit, which is the subject of the health claim. The Panel notes that the references cited provided no scientific data that could be used to substantiate the claimed effect.
The Panel concludes that a cause and effect relationship has not been established between the consumption of kaki fruit and maintenance of normal vision.

Wnioski

On the basis of the data available, the Panel concludes that:
The food, kaki fruit, which is the subject of the health claim is sufficiently characterised.
The claimed effect is “eye health”. The target population is assumed to be the general population. Maintenance of normal vision is beneficial to human health.
A cause and effect relationship has not been established between the consumption of kaki fruit and maintenance of normal vision.
