The food constituent that is the subject of the health claim is Ajuga reptans L.. The characterisation of Ajuga reptans L. is performed by comparing data provided as conditions of use to information extracted from standard reference textbooks (see Table 2 below and Appendix C for list of standard reference textbooks used for the characterisation).

The scientific name is not sufficiently specified, but it is assumed to be Ajuga reptans L.. The part used, the nature of the preparation and the conditions of use are not specified. The Panel notes that the consolidated list contains insufficient information to allow a characterisation of Ajuga reptans L..
The Panel considers that the food constituent Ajuga reptans L., which is the subject of the health claim, has not been sufficiently characterised.

The claimed effect is “trophism of skin and related tissues”. The Panel assumes that the target population is the general population.
“Trophism of skin and related tissues” is not sufficiently defined. From the proposed wording the Panel assumes that the claimed effect refers to the regulation of sebum production.
The Panel considers that normal sebum production is beneficial to human health.

Four references were cited to substantiate the claimed effect. Three references were related to the isolation and identification of various chemical compounds contained in Ajuga reptans L.. One reference was a conference abstract on the antioxidative properties of Ajuga reptans L.. The Panel notes that the references cited did not provide any scientific data that could be used to substantiate the claimed effect.
The Panel concludes that a cause and effect relationship has not been established between the consumption of Ajuga reptans L. and normal sebum production.

Wnioski

On the basis of the data presented, the Panel concludes that:
The food constituent Ajuga reptans L., which is the subject of the health claim, has not been sufficiently characterised.
The claimed effect is “trophism of skin and related tissues”. The target population is assumed to be the general population. Normal sebum production is beneficial to human health.
A cause and effect relationship has not been established between the consumption of Ajuga reptans L. and normal sebum production.
