The food constituent that is the subject of the health claims is L-tryptophan.
L-tryptophan is an indispensable amino acid provided by mixed dietary protein intakes from different sources. L-tryptophan can also be consumed in the form of food supplements. The content of L-tryptophan in foods can be measured by established methods.
The Panel considers that the food constituent, L-tryptophan, which is the subject of the health claims, is sufficiently characterised.

The claimed effect is “weight management (control of carbohydrate consumption)”. The Panel assumes that the target population is the general population.
Weight management can be interpreted as contribution to the maintenance of a normal body weight. In this context, weight loss in overweight subjects without achieving a normal body weight is considered to be a beneficial physiological effect.
The Panel considers that contribution to the maintenance or achievement of a normal body weight is a beneficial physiological effect.

3.4. Udział w utrzymaniu lub osiągnięciu prawidłowej masy ciała (ID 604)

Three references were provided for the scientific substantiation of the claim, which did not investigate the effects of L-tryptophan intake on body weight outcomes. The Panel considers that no conclusions can be drawn from these references for the scientific substantiation of the claimed effect.
The Panel concludes that a cause and effect relationship has not been established between the consumption of L-tryptophan and contribution to the maintenance or achievement of a normal body weight.
