1. Charakterystyka żywności / składnika
The food constituent that is the subject of the health claim is Picea abies (L.) Karsten. The characterisation of Picea abies (L.) Karsten is performed by comparing data provided as conditions of use to information extracted from standard reference textbooks (see Table 2 below and Appendix C for list of standard reference textbooks used for the characterisation).

The Panel considers that the food constituent, Picea abies (L.) Karsten, which is the subject of the health claim, has been sufficiently characterised with the following conditions of use: candy and syrup (50 mL/day): an amount equivalent to 7 g/day of fresh pine shoot.
ID 3493:
The scientific name is not sufficiently specified, but it is assumed to be Picea abies (L.) Karsten. The part used in not specified, but it is assumed that the aetheroleum is from bud, needle or shoot. The
daily amount is not given. The Panel notes that the consolidated list contains insufficient information to allow a characterisation of Picea abies (L.) Karsten.
The Panel considers that the food constituent, Picea abies (L.) Karsten, which is the subject of the health claim, has not been sufficiently characterised.

2. Znaczenie oświadczenia dla zdrowia człowieka
The claimed effects are “respiratory passages” and “respiratory health”. The Panel assumes that the target population is the general population.
The claimed effect “respiratory passages” is not sufficiently defined and “respiratory health” is too broad for a scientific evaluation. From the proposed wordings the Panel assumes that the claimed effects relate to relief in case of tickle in the upper respiratory tract.
The Panel considers that relief in case of irritation in the upper respiratory tract might be beneficial to human health.
3. Naukowe uzasadnienia wpływu na zdrowie człowieka - Łagodzenie objawów podrażnienia górnych dróg oddechowych
Six references were cited to substantiate the claimed effect. One is a regulatory text, three are monographs and two are textbooks. The monographs and the textbooks mention the use of preparations of Picea abies (L.) Karsten in catarrhal diseases. The Panel notes that these references did not provide any scientific data that could be used to substantiate the claimed effect.
The Panel concludes that a cause and effect relationship has not been established between the consumption of Picea abies (L.) Karsten and relief in case of irritation in the upper respiratory tract.
