The food constituent that is the subject of the health claim is Chenopodium quinoa L.. The characterisation of Chenopodium quinoa L. is performed by comparing data provided as conditions of use to information extracted from standard reference textbooks (see Table 2 below and Appendix C for list of standard reference textbooks used for the characterisation).

3. Naukowe uzasadnienia wpływu na zdrowie człowieka - Utrzymanie prawidłowego stanu włosów

Two references were cited to substantiate the claimed effect. One reference was an animal study on the effect of various amino acid infusions into the stomach of sheep on the quality of merino wool. The Panel notes that this reference is not related to Chenopodium quinoa L.. The other reference was related to infant food from quinoa and its effect on the plasma level of insulin-like growth factor-1. The Panel notes that this reference is not related to the claimed effect and does not provide any scientific data that could be used to substantiate the claimed effect.
The Panel concludes that a cause and effect relationship has not been established between the consumption of Chenopodium quinoa L. and maintenance of normal hair.
