1. Charakterystyka żywności / składnika
The food that is the subject of the health claims is almonds. The Panel assumes that the claim refers to sweet almonds.
Almonds (Prunus amygdalus Batsch) contain about 40-50 % fat, of which 22 % are polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs, mostly linoleic acid), 70 % are monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs, mostly oleic acid), and 8 % are saturated fatty acids (SFAs). The amount of fibre is about 9-12 %, 98 % of which is insoluble. In addition, almonds contain small amounts (0.1-0.2 g/100 g) of beta-sitosterol (Maguire et al., 2004; Spiller et al., 1992).
The Panel considers that the food, almonds, which is the subject of the health claims, is sufficiently characterised in relation to the claimed effects.
2.2. Utrzymanie prawidłowej erekcji (ID 2482)
The claimed effect is “fertility”. The Panel assumes that the target population is the general adult male population.
In the context of the proposed wordings, the Panel assumes that the claimed effect refers to the maintenance of normal erectile function.
The Panel considers that maintenance of normal erectile function is a beneficial physiological effect.
3.2. Utrzymanie prawidłowej erekcji (ID 2482)
The three references provided in relation to this claim related to a specific polyherbal formulation containing an extract of Tribulus terrestris L. and powders of Asteracantha longifolia (L.) Nees, Prunus amygdalus Batsch, Blepharis edulis (Forssk.) Pers. and Crocus sativus L. The Panel notes that these studies did not allow an assessment of an effect of almonds (Prunus amygdalus Batsch) per se
on erectile function and considers that no conclusions can be drawn from these references for the scientific substantiation of the claimed effect.
The Panel concludes that a cause and effect relationship has not been established between the consumption of almonds and maintenance of normal erectile function.
