1. Charakterystyka żywności / składnika
The food constituent that is the subject of the claim is Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taubert. The characterisation of Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taubert is performed by comparing data provided as conditions of use to information extracted from standard reference textbooks (see Table 2 below and Appendix C for list of standard reference textbooks used for the characterisation).

The partsused is not specified, but it is assumed that it is the seeds. The daily amount is not specified and the information in the reference textbooks cannot be used to assume that it is the daily amount as these data reflect the use of the single constituent which in case of multibotanicals might not be applicable. The Panel notes that the consolidated list contains insufficient information to allow a characterisation of Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taubert.
The Panel notes that there is no information on the other components of the multibotanical preparation.
The Panel considers that the food constituent, Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taubert, which is the subject of the health claims, has not been sufficiently characterised.
2.1. Osiąganie lub utrzymywanie prawidłowej masy ciała (ID 2428)
The claimed effect is “weight management”. The Panel assumes that the target population is the general population.
Weight management can be interpreted as the contribution to the maintenance of a normal body weight. In this context, even a moderate weight loss in overweight subjects without achieving a normal body weight is considered beneficial to health.
The Panel considers that the maintenance or achievement of a normal body weight is beneficial to human health.
3.1. Osiąganie lub utrzymywanie prawidłowej masy ciała (ID 2428)
Four references were cited to substantiate the claimed effect. These references include a monograph related to guar gum and a textbook related to Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taubert, in which the effect of guar gum on satiety is mentioned. A review article about the role of dietary fibre in energy intake regulation and a human study on modified guar gum were also cited. The human study (Kovacs et al., 2001) investigated the effect of addition of modified guar gum to a low-energy semisolid meal on appetite and body weight loss in 28 overweight male volunteers (age 19-56 years). The study involved three treatment periods of 2 weeks of duration with a low-energy diet containing a semi- solid meal either with or without modified guar gum or a solid meal. The guar gum-supplemented meal prevented the increase in hunger, desire to eat and estimation of how much could be eaten more than the unsupplemented semi-solid meal or the solid meal. However, and despite some variability in the effect on weight loss induced by the order of treatments (any intervention was more effective on weight loss when it took place during the first intervention period), all treatments were equally effective with respect to weight loss compared to baseline values. The Panel notes that it is uncertain to which extent the modified guar gum used in this study relates to the food that is the subject of the health claim (i.e, Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taubert).
The Panel concludes that a cause and effect relationship has not been established between the consumption of Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taubert and the maintenance or achievement of a normal body weight.
