1. Charakterystyka żywności / składnika

The food constituent that is the subject of the health claims is Lactobacillus plantarum 299v. The identification and characterisation of the strain Lactobacillus plantarum 299v by both phenotypic and genotypic methods is included in some of the studies provided as reference material (Johansson et al., 1993; 1995; 1998).
In the references provided, the deposit of the strain at the DSMZ (Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen) with a deposit number DSM 9843 is cited (Johansson et al., 1998; Klarin et al., 2005).
The Panel considers that the strain, Lactobacillus plantarum 299v, which is the subject of the health claims, is sufficiently characterised.

2.2. Ochrona DNA, białek i lipidów przed uszkodzeniem oksydacyjnym (ID 1083)

The claimed effect is “antioxidant properties”. The Panel assumes that the target population is the general population.

In the context of the proposed wording, the Panel assumes that the claimed effect refers to the protection of body cells and molecules from oxidative damage caused by free radicals.
Reactive oxygen species (ROS), including several kinds of radicals, are generated in biochemical processes (e.g. respiratory chain) and as a consequence of exposure to exogenous factors (e.g. radiation and pollutants). These reactive intermediates damage molecules such as DNA, proteins and lipids if they are not intercepted by the antioxidant network, which includes free radical scavengers such as antioxidant nutrients.
The Panel considers that protection of DNA, proteins and lipids from oxidative damage may be a beneficial physiological effect.

3.2. Ochrona DNA, białek i lipidów przed uszkodzeniem oksydacyjnym (ID 1083)

Two references were cited in relation to the claim. One reference addressed the effect of the strain that is the subject of the claim given in combination with several other substances (beta-carotene, alpha-tocopherol, ascorbic acid, pyridoxine, magnesium, manganese, zinc, copper and selenium) on plasma total antioxidant capacity. The Panel considers that no conclusions can be drawn from a study using the strain in combination with other food constituents for the substantiation of a claim on Lactobacillus plantarum 299v alone. The other reference was an animal study unrelated to the claimed effect.
No human studies that addressed the effect of Lactobacillus plantarum 299v alone on outcomes related to the claimed effect were provided.
The Panel concludes that a cause and effect relationship has not been established between the consumption of Lactobacillus plantarum 299v and protection of DNA, proteins and lipids from oxidative damage.
